five miles from all the half smiles stands our happy little home and seasons give us reasons like a metronome so how could you feel so lonely when you are never alone? well, I don't know why but I had to go and take the bus to north of Portland I feel there's something or someone missing so I'll be running these crooked circles like a wayward satellite till I find a home these walls smell like moth balls from well before your birth and bones that gave you your bones vibrate in the earth so we pray for your safe return for whatever that's worth the night sings in colored lightnings blue and gold and grey the voices in these frozen hills have said all they will say so I paid another bus to push those hills away my little cherub my little charmer will you help me off with this body armor? well, I had a good time think I hit the mother lode finally found my doppelganger where I left him by the side of a crooked road

Pop-Up City 02:52
little mountain of steel and pipe-dreams the creatures don’t run from your bright-beams a hammer’s got things to say here and the people are dressed in their days, my dear the road keeps on getting wider Till the city just takes you inside her Little boys and their thieving ways It’s only what they steal that’ll change a giant’s hand from a pop-up city I will go willingly and I will take this trip down future lane I will leave my given name with you…. but I have been such a bloody fool I was just your garden tool I thought that I’d end up with memories but I just lost my car keys somewhere new….

Waiting 04:04
the storm door opens - like a giant's hand our silent footfalls - frozen in the sand working boats roll shoreward - a team of tired sprinters summer town is zipping up its jacket for the winter and I'm waiting for your eyes to open like a curtain on a stage the bird will sing when it flees the cage and one day this black spell will be broken and the waiting will be done the more that I can see your face the more like you i that become abandoned sawmill - shattered glass and beams gutted and seeded with a hundred silver screens beyond the pixels - a shining new frontier we hunt for life forms that we never could find here and we're waiting for your eyes to open like the curtain on a stage an open the book on a tattered page and one day this black spell will be broken and the waiting will be done and we shall see what you’ve become and there will be mountains and deep valleys never be another choice the straightaways are short and sweet lead us to them with your voice

don’t fall asleep, you’ll overshoot the beltway (dirty city, this dirty town) and if you waver from the plan on retribution day (hell to pay, there’ll be hell to pay) the motor inn – there is no better cover (get the one with the mini-bar) out of the wilderness we go! don’t play the victim, you don’t wanna go there (no you didn’t, oh no you don’t) you will just get eaten by an even bigger bear (precious honey is what they love) what is that smell? son, that’s the future burning. (this is what we’ve been waiting for) we’re killing commies with a phone! so much for the flowers so much for the candles it always comes down to what God and Beauty can’t handle now you’ve got a finger and we’ve got a trigger if we bring them together we can make this place much bigger it don’t make a sound, the voice is like a feeling (talk too much, yeah you talk too much) it’s the candlelight that’s dancing on the ceiling (in the body, it’s in the blood) our boys can sing an old man’s song! so much for the flowers so much for the candles it always comes down to what God and Beauty can’t handle oh captain, my captain teach me how to use this contraption we know where they’re hiding aluminum siding

Eva 04:20
eva has a question for the man "in all your travels when the roads turned to gravel did you turn and go back home?" and maybe she could ask you one more thing "if you found religion in feeding pigeons, what do you do when they all fly away?" "and what's the point of all this struggle to try to find yourself another, when there's so much to be missed and there's no loneliness like the loneliness of a lover?" another day another dollar down her education taught delayed gratification, but was silent on how long to delay and what about these things that she's acquired, are they extensions of her best intentions or do they just distract her from what she'd rather not see? "and what's the point of all this struggle to try to find yourself another, when I always find my bliss and there's no loneliness like the loneliness of a lover?"
6.
Rivulets 02:57
travel lightly, turning slightly blue just like a pilgrim’s supposed to do sweet contagion, Appalachian flu has got its hooks inside of you but only red, red rivulets get through rolling over leaves and rocks and roots through the muscled mountains to the truth it’s the blood that’s speaking through our boots with ageless rhythm, catechism a line of temples falling down poison weather, English leather shoes beating a path I did not choose “take my hand you clever man”, she said and wiped a hailstone from my head but only red, red rivulets can roam when they leave our bodies here alone and wherever she stands, stands my home she’s a lullaby that I intone with ageless rhythm, catechism in this old temple falling down
7.
All Is Real 02:25
today your voice sounds like the evening and your words are like the dawn but I wish more people did their grieving in the form of peasant songs and so I float like a flake to lay my head on a frozen lake you trickle by through the field we thaw into whatever you feel all is real I try to get all my mistakes in, while my friends are out of town but if a tree falls in the city, does really it make a sound? the more I drink, the less I read like trying to un-plant a seed you trickle by in early spring we’re thawing through the openings of real things
8.
Elephantine 03:28
an empty room, a cluttered mind crammed full of all of God’s designs elephantine and when the subway comes to me I’m always giving up my seat elephantine and my love’s too great for only one I crush a taxi with my thumb can’t shake the sound of distant drums elephantine and I see you rising from your chair we just can’t have you going there elephantine and if you love me now too much this is a love I cannot trust elephantine and from the blackness of that shivering street one fist of lamplight plunging deep into the face up in the sky elephantine I see a face up in the sky elephantine
9.
I Can't Wait 03:07
I can’t wait till I forget that shade of blue that made up your eyes on the day that I met you and I can’t wait till every object in the room won’t tell me a story ‘bout the time you used it too a swiss chalet, a moonlit bay - will it take all her pain away? a life of humble pie for dessert - I get a little on every shirt. and all my marbles roll away when she tells me I can stay. somewhere now there sits a lady on a train she’s a little bit sweet and a little bit deranged and when we meet I will feel something like regret she’s already doing things I never will forget a swiss chalet, a moonlit bay - will it take all her pain away? a life of humble pie for dessert - I get a little on every shirt. and all my marbles they can’t wait to forget about those days.
10.
who climbed the willow with me? kingdom as far as the naked eye sees balcony who ruled the white woods as one? we got our strength from the sun the lonely old sun pendulum are you going back to the old house? are you wiping the dust from the blinds? can you see those kids and the places they hid? are they laughing the air from their minds? there’s a moon-faced girl as shy as a bird please remind her of me if you can. you’ve got a heart’s tooth and a fountain of youth and you’ll never come this way again. two shadows run down the street two shadows stick to our feet small and neat incomplete who tore the hole in your clothes? who left your blood on the rose? thorn exposed decompose are you going back to the old house? are you wearing a crown of black flies? is the air up there still colder than snow does the water still freeze in your eyes? there are vacancies at the hotel of dreams there are lives that are waiting unlived you’ve got a heart’s tooth and a fountain of youth waging war on our dead narratives
11.
I was telling a story to test her endurance the thief in her eyes was not a deterrent but I don’t mind, that you are so unkind why should I mind? I look at you and I go blind meet me at the beehive turn my money into flat beer one leap through the doorway coulda spared me a bad year but I don’t mind, that the truth is so unkind. why should I mind? if that’s just how it was designed? and I am just a television I came to bathe you in blue light I wanna shape your bad decisions I want to fly you like a kite and when the FDA takes all your pills away I’ll be right there by your side and when the FBI has got you on the wire I know just the place to hide cuz this town’s a lonely child it’s an endless kiss and it’s a hockey fight see the cameras in the air they will rob you while you’re just standing there there’s an eye that sees through walls and the nukes are loose and it’s all Russia’s fault in a week you will find out that you’ve been starring in a movie with me. out in Central Europe cathedrals have antlers the mark of the pagan the year with no answers and I don’t mind, that creatures are unkind. why should I mind? have I been missing all the signs? and I am just a cathode ray tube I live to glow with your desire I wanna be your wonder-twin power I’ll be the secret in the wire and when the IRS digs up your treasure chest I will talk you off the roof and when the NRA has got you in its sway I’ll try not to be aloof cuz we buried all our breath and we laughed at our own expense we put on a thousand uniforms and we’re leveraged out on our first-born honey, all of the craters on the moon will not hold the tears we’ll all be crying soon in a week you will find out that you’ve been starring in a movie by yourself
12.
Small Hours 04:04
you’ve been sleeping on the floor I never saw you do that before. endless digging through the layers what evilness are you waiting for? in this tiny house, what could it be? is it person, place or thing or deity? does your magic cat have any spells for me? deep in the small hours I can hear her digging and pacing underground the signal’s stronger then much weaker my head is filled with jagged sounds walking through an empty lakebed try to find what used to swim how can you live your life so naked when everyone is so buttoned in I want to hear the evil too in this tiny house we’ll disinter the truth from the underground we’ll shake our bodies loose deep in the small hours I can hear her what is her name? I never ask it’s only small things I can bring her profundities evade my grasp the birds are falling into sequence the winds are stirring up the leaves I hear the thumping of a presence coming to life beneath the eaves
13.
it’s growing outward like a leaf it’s sprouting legs and hands and teeth this morning violent and free I see your map & you want to drive away with my pride never ever to be seen by the naked eye over that hill never you find never ever to be seen by the naked eye but, I’ll take the river dance on the knife of purity ache, shake and shiver the river brings the love to me don’t need a microscope to read the fingerprints of history there’s a chromosome that built a ship and now I live inside of it I know a place where we can meet I’ll mark the map to where you must drive away with your pride never ever to be seen by the naked eye over that hill never you find never ever to be seen by the naked eye just take the river dance on the knife of purity ache, shake and shiver a prayer that opens to the sea not going with them to fade into a litany we’ll take the river where there’s no choice but to be free just take the river….
